At Lawrence North High School, students are encouraged to reach out to fellow musicians and offer assistance to those who may need help learning a new instrument, figuring out a difficult music arrangement, or seeking a mentor.
During marching band season, one student from each instrument section is selected to lead and mentor the group. This person possesses great leadership qualities and good communication skills. He/she is responsible for section practices, moral boosting, and team building.
In each of the concert bands, musicians are being challenged to perform at their best. This includes playing tests on excerpts from their repetoire to earn their position or “chair” in the band. As students progress during the school year, they are encouraged to challenge the person in the higher chair in order to improve their chair placement. In this kind of environment, students are motivated to succeed musically.
